Frequently asked questions

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the art and science concerned with the balance of structure and function in the spine and nervous system. Chiropractic is a drug and surgery free modality of treatment concerned with the diagnosis, management and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system; this includes the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. Australian chiropractors are highly qualified healthcare professionals who study at university for a minimum of five years, and there is growing research and evidence base not only in Australia but through international federations (CAA)

How does it work?

The underlying principle of Chiropractic is that good health requires good nervous system function. Irritation or loss of movement along the 24 mobile segments of the spine can impair or interfere with the proper function of the nervous system. Chiropractors aim to improve the function of the spine and nervous system through Chiropractic adjustments. There are many different types of adjustments; some are quick, others use slow steady pressure, and tools such as specialised tables or an "activator" may be used.

Is it safe?

Chiropractors are registered by the Chiropractic Board of Australia and like all other registered health care providers, must adhere to National Law and profession specific codes of conduct and guidelines. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record in its 100 year history, and has been declared "remarkably safe" by a New Zealand government study. In relation to the treatment of neck and back pain, studies have shown that a course of chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs (Dabbs,V., & Lauretti,W.J. (1995)

Who can be treated? What ages?

Anyone! And all ages! Everyone can enjoy better function and health through Chiropractic. For seniors, improved spinal function can mean better mobility, endurance. Researchers in New Zealand have shown improved reaction times in seniors under Chiropractic care- this can help reduce falls and injuries. For athletes Chiropractic reduces the wear and tear on the body, improves function, and is a drug and surgery way of reducing pain and managing injuries. Experts estimate that 90 percent of all world-class athletes use chiropractic care to prevent injuries and increase their performance potential. Children and even infants can also benefit, because spinal trauma can occur at birth, and later during childhood activities. There is also a growing body of evidence to suggest that Chiropractic is helpful in reducing crying in collicy babies. Dr Jennifer and Dr Heather utilise the Well Kids program to help Children function at their best
